Teaching Philosophy
“Writing, like hip-hop, is both personal and powerful. It’s how we process, express, and grow.”

I use the energy of the cypher—collaboration, creativity, and challenge—to help students write with voice, vision, and purpose.

With over 20 years of experience teaching high school, college, and university students, I meet students where they are—and push them toward who they’re becoming.

H2TW: Hip-hop Therapeutic Writing with Dr. JL
“Rewrite the Narrative, Remix the Mind”

Who It's For
This program is for teen dads, at-promise students, and young adults who’ve lived through trauma but are ready to heal and grow.
Participants must be open to:
-
Using hip-hop and griot storytelling
-
Reflecting on SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences)
-
Engaging in free, non-academic writing—no grades, no pressure, just truth
This program is not a replacement for talk therapy—it’s a complementary healing space.
Sessions are available in 1-on-1 or small group format via Zoom.

What We Do
Hip-hop Therapeutic Writing (H2TW) uses a creative journaling process rooted in Black storytelling and lyrical expression to help you confront trauma, reclaim identity, and rewrite your personal narrative.
Through the EDR Method—Externalize, Deconstruct, and Rewrite—you’ll explore:
How family stories shaped your identity
How to challenge toxic narratives
How to speak life into your future
Every session includes:
Guided writing prompts
Hip-hop lyric analysis
Spoken word journaling
Mindfulness and self-affirmation

The EDR Method
Externalize – Get it out. Write your pain, your truth, your memories. Put the pen to the page and free the weight from your chest.
Deconstruct – Break it down like a DJ with crates. Where did these stories come from? Who told you that you weren’t enough? You have the right to question and remix it all.
Rewrite – Draft the future. Pen your manifesto. Tell the world who you are and who you’re becoming.
This is your write of passage.
