"I been walkin’ with my back to the sun..." – Denzel Curry
I used to think chasing degrees and paychecks made me a good father.
I thought modeling work ethic was the key to legacy.
But what I really passed down were my wounds.
I yelled at my son when he mirrored the parts of me I hadn’t healed.
I used discipline as a shield because I didn’t know how to sit with my fear.
Fear that I wasn’t enough.
That I’d fail him like I was failed.
But I chose to turn around.
I faced the light.
I sought therapy. I picked up the pen.
And I started rewriting my story—as a father and as a man.
Now I help other fathers, students, and educators do the same through H2TW: Hip-Hop Therapeutic Writing. We use music like Curry’s “Walkin” to unpack trauma, shift narratives, and build emotional intelligence.
