Wanna Reach Your Students ? Be Jesus.

Writer's picture: Dad CypherDad Cypher

Educators come up to me all the time asking me why should they use Hip-hop Therapeutic Writing to boost their students' social-emotional learning.

"We must unravel the mysteries hidden in lyrics to soften callous hearts."Use hip-hop as a bridge to connect, teach, and heal.

Listen up, ELA educators,

Let me tell you a story.

So you want to fix your students. Be Jesus. I don’t expect you to walk on water or find a room full of young people with two fish and five loaves of bread. Do you know how much these kids eat?

We must think of ourselves not as educators but as parable sayers.

Jesus talked to an agricultural people. He spoke about farming and seeds. He would have been a fool to talk about Star Trek. They would not have been able to relate. He knew he was speaking with a hard-headed group with a mass of dead skin around their hearts and ears.

Educators should not fear using hip-hop as a bridge to connect, teach, and heal.

"We must unravel the mysteries hidden in lyrics to soften callous hearts."

I know some administrators are like Pharisees, wanting you to follow the letter of the law of standardized tests. That swamp land of standardized learning is alienating you from your students.

You cannot increase their literacy skills if you cannot soften their hearts

They are callous because they are afraid.

They are callous because they do not feel safe.

They are callous because they are confused.

The callous on their minds is their protection.

We must pierce their hearts by making the familiar unfamiliar.

We need ELA teachers to have the faith of a mustard seed. Use the power of hip-hop as the juice to get them to swallow the medicine they need

Then, they become the disciples of life learning.
